Walk-on glass – more light with safety

LITE-FLOOR R
slip-resistance for internal applications

The upper sheet is manufactured with a slip-resistant ceramic coating (tested to DIN 51130, BGR 181, UKSRG and ASTM).

LITE-FLOOR EXT
slip-resistance for external applications

Laminated safety glass with slip-resistant surface etching, partially transparent or satinised – for external applications.
Even with breakage of the upper sheet, the glass retains structural integrity.

The type of glass to be used depends on the dimensions, the support method and design loads. Thickness diagrams can be found in the application technical notes later.

Visualize the standard coating and their colours in full and partial coverage. In high foot-traffic application such as schools, stores etc. We recommend only full-coverage coating. It is also possible to create individual colours from our LITEX colour palette.

Please consider our cleaning instructions for special colours [>].

Standard colour – partial coverage – BF 727WS
Standard colour – full coverage - BFS910WS
Special colours can be found in the LITE-FLOOR design studio

LITE-FLOOR RTF

These products additionally fulfill the requirements of impact resistance and resulting necessary structural integrity to German standards and have a general construction permit.

The type of glass to be used depends on the dimensions, the support method and design loads.

The upper sheet is manufactured with a slip-resistant ceramic coating (tested to DIN 51130, BGR 181, UKSRG and ASTM).
For designs see the virtual design studio LITE-FLOOR R and RTF.

LITE-FLOOR Insulated glass

For thermal insulation, it is possible to manufacture all LITE-FLOOR Types into walk-on insulated units. It is possible to achieve a Ug-Value of up to 1,2 W/m².K. A suitable frame construction is necessary. Possible glass types are available on request.

1. Application technical notes

The type of glass to be used depends on the dimensions, the support method and design loads as well as the frequency of foot traffic.

Specific national, regional or local codes and/or standards for application of walk-on-glass can differ significantly. The purchaser is responsible for the prevailing requirements.

1.1 Structural dimensioning

The required glass thickness is dependent on the support method, dimensions of glass and the load condition and must be structurally determined for each specific application. The thickness tables provided on the right have been established through complete analysis based on the Austrian Standard ÖNORM B 1991-1-1.

1.2 Design notes

  • Slip-resistance
The requirement for slip-resistant characteristics in Austria is given for example in the State Law book 32 for Vienna, dated 29. June 2005, Article 27, ÖNORM B 1600 barrier-free Building as well as the guideline for workplaces from the BMfWA § 6. A definitive test requirement and evaluation for slip-resistance is not given and therefore must be determined by the designer with respect to its use.

When determining slip-resistance it is necessary to take account of the fact that high slip-resistant surfaces may be contrary to requirements to avoid tripping, and also the respective increased cleaning regime required. As a good orientation point the Swiss consultation department for accident prevention in the service industry states that the value of R10 is suitable for restaurants and lift areas.

  • Marking
In Austrian Standard ÖNORM B 1600 – Barrier-free Building - under Point 3.2.4.1.5, there is a requirement for all generally accessible areas where there is an entry and exit step and or ramp to be marked with a contrasting colour (preferably yellow) stripe of at least 50mm width.

  • Surface durability
As the substrate glass used for LITE-FLOOR is normal commercial soda-lime glass, it can be expected that outdoor shoes will cause surface scratching and that heavily trafficked areas will have irregular wear patterns in the coating.

In contrast to floor tiles, the translucency of glass may cause irregular wear to be more recognizable. For floors with high foot traffic we recommend complete surface coverage using BFS910WS.

  • Safety note
Glass breakage is unusual under normal service conditions because of the high safety factors used in design. Should, however, breakage occur as a result of extreme mechanical overload (e.g. Vandalism, etc.), it is important to note that:

    • Glass breakage of the uppermost sheet: Although structural integrity remains, danger of injury through splinters cannot be excluded. We therefore recommend that the glass be covered.

    • Glass breakage of the carrier sheets The broken unit should not be walked on and should be replaced with suitably safe material immediately.

1.3 Cleaning

Slip-resistance can only be achieved with a rough surface. The better the slip-resistance is, the more the rough surface coverage. Abrasions from shoe soles, general grime etc. cause remnants to be left in the surface coating which can only be removed with extensive cleaning methods. We therefore recommend the lowest suitable slip-resistance with our standard coating to be used. Full coverage surfaces should only use design BFS910WS. For the reasons stated above we do not recommend the use of light colours.

2. Processing

2.1 Edge working

Standard is all edges ground flat (KGN)
Optional is edges polished (KPO)

For edge working of all rectangular sheets (KGN, KPO) the corners are matt swiped.

Subsequent treatment of the edges is not permissible.

2.2 Edge shift

With LITE-FLOOR it is the same as all multiple laminated glasses whereby edge shift can be expected as shown in the Handbook Tolerances. A reference edge can – when indicated on orders – be produced without a shifted edge tolerance.

2.3 Cut-outs

It is standard that all cut-outs are made with a water-jet cut (KGNW). This is the term for an edge, the surface of which has been worked along its entirety with the water-jet. Water-jet cut edges have a matt frosted appearance. Cut-outs, notches or corner cut-offs are generally carried out using the water-jet cutting technique.

3. Marking

LITE-FLOOR R is not marked as standard.

LITE-FLOOR RTF is marked in accordance with specific requirements of the local authority.
