DLS MICRO LOUVRE Technology

Directed Light and Solar control in Insulated units

DLS MICRO LOUVRE is based on the specially developed geometry of the louvre. Direct Sunlight is excluded by using project-specific orientation of the louvre blades. This function is achieved by using a highly-reflective pure aluminium coating which changes only a small amount of short-wave light into long-wave light.

The reflection and transmission area is mirrored with purest aluminium Al 99,99 and stabilized with a coating of SiO2.

The transmission area is always project-oriented to North and allows only the Zenith and diffuse daylight – really glare-free light – to come into the room below.

DLS COMBISOL

Is a further development whereby the louvre geometry has its function split into two levels. The second level directs the light into defined areas and therefore excludes absolutely all glare from direct sunlight – reduced light intensity provides the room with uniform diffused light.

DLS PRISMA

The optical law of total reflection – if light hits below a maximum angle on the surface of a dense to a less dense material, it is reflected – is used with prismatic plates of highly transparent Acrylic glass 8N. Direct sunlight is reflected, diffuse daylight is allowed into the room. To achieve optimum reflection, one side of the prism is mirrored with purest aluminium. The solid area keeps direct sunlight out. Project oriented installation of the prism structures allows either light-direction or solar control to be optimised. Light-directing prisms are also particularly suitable for vertical applications in windows and facades and direct the large amount of light normally at the window deep into the room.

A combination with 2-layer prism plates guarantees maximum solar control, the best light direction and glare-free light.

3. General notes for design

The performance characteristics of DLS MICRO LOUVRE, with respect to the ergonomic conditions of dynamic light and energy scenarios, require a specific design evaluation.

Current legislation in respective countries is oriented towards the thermal energy performance of the EU Buildings guideline 2002/91/EG.

In harmonization thereto, the OIB has in its paper – RL 6 – energy savings and thermal insulation - for the first time determined requirements for cooling in non-residential buildings. At the same time a maximum room temperature of 27°C in accordance with ÖNORM B 8110-3 has been set. This is also applicable for residential buildings when no other limits for cooling have been established.

Designing for summer comfort has the challenge of mastering the conflict of desire for light (and with it heat) and the requirement to avoid overheating.

The statutory code and standard requirements of using such glass are usually specific to the country and location of the installation. The purchaser must ensure that all such requirements are fulfilled and specified before buying.

For the application of glass in Austria the Guideline 4 is relevant. Contained therein is the strict requirement that the inner sheet of an insulated unit used in overhead glazing must be of STADIP laminated safety glass.

4. Certification

Test reports for thermal transmission, total energy transmission and other technical performance can be found in the test reports on the right.

5. Technical application notes

The characteristics of DLS MICRO LOUVRE and DLS COMBISOL predestine the product for sloped and roof glazing up to a maximum of 60° from the horizontal. DLS PRISMA is also suitable for vertical glazing.

The standard compositions have a dual-seal system whereby the primary seal is Polyisobutylene and the Secondary seal of Polysulfide (Thiokol). This edge seal system is to be protected from UV-rays with cover plates of a minimum depth of 17mm.

Particulars of glazing rebate sizing

The louvre inserts or prism plates have a transparent plastic profile around their perimeter as standard. If a normal rebate depth is used it is possible that the necessary system expansion joints create light cracks between the insert and spacer bar.

Glazing Guidelines

The glazing rebate should be executed in accordance with EN 18545. Larger rebates should be avoided as this could lead to excessive thermal load on the inner laminated sheet of glass.

Because each project is calculated and designed by us for its specific building orientation, slope and geographic location, each unit that is ordered is given an unique position and location on the roof.

This positioning is strictly necessary to ensure correct performance. The position of each unit must be carefully followed during installation.

General cleaning instructions

Accumulation of dirt can reduce the performance and value of such a complex light-directing product. As roof glazing is normally difficult to maintain, we recommend using BIOCLEAN [>] – Glass with easy-to-clean coating – for the outer sheet.

DLS MICRO LOUVRE has no special glazing guidelines.

Marking

In its installed state, each insulated unit is marked – orientation, customer position – readable and located on the plastic U-profile in the bottom right corner when viewed from outside.

In accordance with EN 14179 all fully tempered safety glass is visibly and permanently marked.
