* Ug-value for vertical glazing

Ug-Value

U-Values given relate exclusively to vertical glazing. U-Values for sloped or horizontal glazing are worse. In European Standard EN 673 Point 5.3.1 and 5.3.2, values for the calculation of horizontal glazing are given. As an example, a Ug-Value of 1.1 W/m²K in vertical glazing increases to 1.7 W/m²K when horizontally installed.

The Ug-value tables to DIN EN 673 show the performance of insulated units at a glance. The tables have been created by ift Rosenheim and indicate the given values in accordance with the European standard.

2. Edge seal

2.1 Standard composition

Triple-glazed insulating glass with closed-end,bent corner spacer system. Aluminium spacer 0.067 ψ W/m.K. Dual seal system with primary seal of Polyisobutylene and secondary seal of Polysulphide.

2.2 UV-resistant edge seal / Silicon Structural Glazing

It is possible to achieve a gas-filled UV-resistant cavity using silicone as the secondary edge seal and CHROMATECH PLUS spacer bars. The requirements of EN 1279-2 are fulfilled by such insulated units. The requirements given in this Eurocode have been substantiated in test report TC-RAP-06-18364.

Warm-Edge solutions recommended

The insulating glass range CLIMATOP are not only available with conventional Aluminium spacer bars but also with spacers with low energy transmission. This „Warm-Edge“ system reduces the thermal bridges at the edge of the and improves the thermal performance of the window by up to 10 % and at the same time minimising the risk of condensation at the edge of the glass and frame.

The window-integral warm bridge is characterized by the linear thermal transmittance coefficient ψfg or „ψ-Value“ and is taken into account when calculating the UW-Value of the window.

In the new EN ISO 10077-1 standard, the thermal transmission coefficient of a complete window is determined from the U-values of glass and frame areas as well as the ψ-value of the glass perimeter.

CHROMATECH PLUS

Measurements and calculations at ift Rosenheim have shown that thin-walled stainless steel spacer systems have significantly lower ψ-values. A typical comparison of use in aluminium, wood and PvC frames is as follows:

Frame material Linear thermal transmittance coefficient Ψ W/m.K for CLIMATOP
CHROMATECH PLUS Aluminium
Wood 0,045 0,08
Metal with thermal break 0,056 0,11
PVC 0,044 0,05

It is possible that CHROMATECH PLUS reduces the UW-value in windows – depending on the frame material – by approx. 0,1 W/m².K. The likelihood of condensation at the edge of the insulating unit is visibly minimised.

Simplified standard value calculation

For window frames it is possible to use simplified standard values in accordance with appendix E2 and E8 of EN 10077-1, E3. The simplified calculation tends towards worse results.

We recommend the use of black CHROMATECH PLUS.

3. Application technical notes

Energy certification

For all new buildings it is necessary to provide an energy certificate [>] before permission to build is granted. For existing buildings this will also be required prior to renting or leasing from 1.1.2009.

Detailed information can be found in the OIB Guideline 6 – Energy saving and thermal insulation (german version) [>].
