3. Function principle

The significant performance element of GLASSX®crystal is as a thermal storage module, which absorbs solar energy, stores that energy and then gradually releases a pleaseant amount into the room. As a storage material PCM (Phase Change Material) is used in the form of a salt hydrate. The energy (thermal) storage occurs by „smelting“ the PCM exactly between 26 and 28 °C (comfort zone of humans). When it cools, the heat energy is relased.

In Winter months (low-lying sun) the radiation energy permeates through the angle-selective prismatic glass and is released in a controlled and uniform manner into the inner space.

In Summer, the prismatic glass reflects the high-standing sun > 40° to the outside (overheating protection). The PCM Storage module, which does not release any energy above 27 °C, can absorb heat from the room and store it. This significantly reduces heat-spikes and assists climatic control.

4. Application technical notes

GLASSX®crystal is – as normal insulating glass - to be installed in suitable window or facade constructions.

The principle of self-regulating protection from overheating requires that the units are installed facing South with a maximum deviation of +/- 30°. Deviations greater than this are possible but require the integration of a variable solar control system – such as DLS ECKLITE [>]. This system requires an automatic sun-tracking control.
