Bibliotheca Alexandria

On the site where the old „Bibliotheca Alexandrina“ fell victim to flames in 48 BC, today stretches the new Bibliotheca Alexandria. A spectacular modern accent is set by its unusual circular shape as an intentional contrast to its surroundings. With a diameter of 160 meters, the roof is sloped towards the sea at an angle of 15°. The challenge lay in the very large units which had to fulfill high UV, sun and acoustic protection requirements because of the extreme weather conditions in Egypt. (Photo: Gerald Zugmann)
