Lugner Walkway, Vienna

The elegant, internationally acclaimed glass construction of the architect-duo Bulant & Wailzer built for the Lugner Shopping City which crosses over the “belt” roads around Vienna is a glass advertising carrier and lit-up pink and blue at night. The particular character of the bridge can be seen in its refined relationship between support structure, constructive geometry and its outer skin. The sides of the bridge are not parallel, rather slightly twisted against each other, which gives quite a unique and self-derived perspective of differing appearances. The irregular relationship between the structure and glass skin has a particular attraction in that the visitors feel something unusual even though they don’t consciously recognise what it is.
