Architecture that connects
A monolithic annex to a successful, existing center built in the late 80’s with strong relevance to the cityscape. The four-storey expansion is based on the concept of ATP’s winning competition entry in 2004. The architects explained in their concept: „The expansion of Sillpark provides the otherwise disappointing situation in this cityscape with a new identity. The addition of the monolithic volume which sits firmly on the podium of the existing building brings substance and serenity to the complex. The future space in front of the Sillpark is now composed – there is now a great open space overlooking the inner city.“
The new building structure sitting on the podium which has developed from the square is like a matt shimmering sculpture. Structure and interior/exterior relevance is achieved through the varying use in the materiality of the individual glasses. Integration of the interior of both bodies is created by connecting the existing mall to the new building with a loop.
Night-active facade
It is only the facade which distinguishes the old from the new. Close cooperation with the lighting consultant Bartenbach allowed the development of interaction between integrated lighting technology and the glass. The characteristic night-time apparition of the new Sillpark is achieved using 1,800 m² of special glass together with 1,200 meters of LED-lighting. The individual glass elements of the solar control glazing have light-directing reflectors at their horizontal edges (light reflection of 96 %). These special reflector-spacers direct the light from the interior LEDs upwards in the glass cavity and back down again. The differing coverage of white LITEX screen-print on different surfaces makes the LED light visible and during the night almost looks like a complete surface. The alternating light effects at night are created by programming and controlling the patterns and movements of the LEDs.
The facade is also an interesting feature during daytime - with its LITEX on different surfaces it creates a matt finish. Clear units allow views in and out of the shopping center.
Roof
The two-storey inner space is covered by a glass roof. To achieve effective solar control and provide a variety of daylighting conditions, the SUNEX insulated units have also been printed with differing degrees of black screen-print and incorporate areas of SATINOVO. These measures support the reduction of energy transmittance and reduce the cooling load.
A further innovation is the extensive greening of the roof – a contribution to the microclimate of the inner city.
Sillpark was one of five selected projects nominated for the Retail+Future Projects Award 2007 in the category of Shopping Center at MAPIC in Cannes.
